The Philadelphia Eagles came into the 2026 regular season with Jalen Hurts as their starting quarterback, but plenty of uncertainty behind him.

Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee went back and forth for the QB2 job, with rookie Cole Payton firmly as the team's fourth QB. Howie Roseman kept four QBs on the roster through Week 4, but he's finally made a change.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Eagles are releasing Dalton, shaking up their QB depth chart behind Hurts, and officially stamping McKee as the team's QB2 moving forward.

Eagles release Andy Dalton amid QB room shakeup

"The Eagles are releasing QB Andy Dalton, sources say," Garafolo reports. "Tanner McKee and Cole Payton will be the backups to Jalen Hurts moving forward."

This decision from the Eagles should not come as a surprise, especially after what happened in Week 3 and prior to Week 4.

Hurts was hit late out of bounds against the Chicago Bears and had to get checked out by medical officials on the sideline. Dalton came in, and on his first pass attempt, he threw an interception on third down at the goal line.

It was a horrible mistake, and it might've been too much for the Eagles to overcome in that matchup, as they lost handily to the Bears with their third-string QB in the game.

That was Dalton's lone pass attempt with the Eagles this season, and the Eagles made a change, naming McKee as the backup for Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Now, heading into Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, with a plethora of injuries all across the roster, the Eagles are releasing Dalton to create a roster spot and shake up their QB depth chart.

The Eagles never should have kept four quarterbacks on the roster in the first place, especially since Dalton doesn't provide much value.

But now, they've moved on from the former Cincinnati Bengals and Carolina Panthers quarterback. He could wind up coming back in some capacity, but for now, he's no longer an Eagle, and McKee slides into the QB2 role full time while Payton is now QB3.
