Eagles get good news on retirement worry

1 hour ago 2

The Philadelphia Eagles had to deal with a retirement worry over the last week.

Turns out, Vic Fangio likely isn't going anywhere.

The standout defensive coordinator and former NFL head coach has been crucial to the Eagles' success in recent years, including in winning the Super Bowl a year ago.

Fangio will turn 68 years old in August on the eve of the 2026 NFL season getting underway, and rumors since the season ended suggested retirement might be looming.

But Eagles beat writer EJ Smith shared the opposite news on X on Monday:

"While Vic Fangio did seriously entertain retiring as recently as last week, my understanding that is no longer the case and that the #Eagles are confident in his return at this point after much persuasion. He's expected to be back as defensive coordinator next season."

That's great news for Philly, which had a more disappointing season this year in being unable to defend its Super Bowl title.

Fangio's defense was still strong despite losing a lot of the best players he had at his disposal en route to the Super Bowl.

The Eagles have plenty to figure out this offseason, potentially led by what to do with star wide receiver A.J. Brown and potential trade rumors.

They also took a while to hire an offensive coordinator, and the coaching market is mostly slowing down.

On that front, it's key that Fangio hasn't decided to step down, because the market would've been quite picked over.

Instead, it sounds like the Eagles will have one of their leaders back for another season.
