Dolphins cut 129-tackle starter in shocking defensive shakeup

The Miami Dolphins are making a significant change in the middle of their defense just before the regular season.

Miami is releasing veteran linebacker Tyrel Dodson after two seasons with the organization, a source confirmed Sunday to ESPN. The decision clears the way for second-round rookie Jacob Rodriguez to take on a prominent role in the Dolphins’ defense.

It’s a notable departure considering Dodson’s production.

Miami claimed Dodson off waivers during the 2024 season, and he quickly made an impact, recording three interceptions in eight games. The Dolphins rewarded him with a two-year contract the following offseason.

Dodson responded with the most productive tackling season of his career, finishing 2025 with 129 tackles.

But Miami’s investment in Rodriguez signaled that competition was coming.

The Dolphins selected the former Texas Tech standout in the second round, and his role steadily increased throughout training camp. Rodriguez began receiving more opportunities alongside Miami’s first-team defense, while Dodson played 37 snaps in the preseason finale despite many projected starters sitting out.

Defensive coordinator Sean Duggan said Rodriguez’s growth has become increasingly noticeable.

“I think the game’s slowing down for Jacob,” Duggan said, pointing to Rodriguez’s improved understanding of defensive calls, run responsibilities and coverage assignments.

Rodriguez recently missed practice and Miami’s preseason finale because of an undisclosed injury, but the Dolphins reportedly aren’t concerned about his availability for Week 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Dodson’s release also creates an opportunity for former undrafted linebacker Jackson Woodard to make Miami’s initial 53-man roster.

For Dodson, the move could quickly generate interest elsewhere.

The 28-year-old has accumulated 236 combined tackles over the past two seasons, ranking 19th among qualified linebackers during that span. His four interceptions rank fifth at the position.

Miami, however, is choosing youth and upside.

Rodriguez entered training camp attempting to earn playing time.

Now he’s positioned to potentially call the defense and start immediately.
