How Giants lost a 2,208 win-streak after crushing loss to Reds

The San Francisco Giants are having a rough 2026 season. There's no need to sugarcoat it: Tony Vittelo's first season with the franchise has been a nightmare.

But it's not like things can't get worse. That's exactly what happened recently to the Giants during their series against the Cincinnati Reds.

As USA Today's Bob Nightengale highlighted, after the Giants' loss to the Reds on Wednesday, August 26, when they held a six-run lead in the ninth but still lost, it ended a 2,208-game streak of wins in such scenarios in Giants' history.

"The San Francisco Giants were 2,208-0 in their history when leading by six or more runs in the ninth inning before playing the Cincinnati Reds," Nightengale writes. "They are now 2,208-1. They have now lost 11 games with a lead in the ninth, the most in MLB"

The Giants fell to the Reds 10-9 in San Francisco after entering the ninth inning up 9-3. They allowed a solo homer, a single, and back-to-back walks to load the bases, all with no outs.

Then Eugenio Suarez hit a grand slam to make it 9-8, all still with no outs. An infield single followed by an error that got the runner over to second base. A bunt, an infield single, and a stolen base led to a sacrifice fly scoring a run and moving the go-ahead run to third.

One batter later, a single made it 10-9 in the ninth inning, officially cementing an all-time terrible blown lead for the Giants. But even after such a disaster, the game wasn't over yet. They still had the bottom of the ninth to win the game.

However, a Buddy Kennedy pop-out led, followed by a Turner Hill single before a Drew Cavanaugh strikeout and a Christian Koss strikeout ended the game and the historic collapse.

In the Giants' long franchise history, they won 2,208 games in a row while leading by at least six runs in the ninth inning. That is, until they blew such a lead to the Reds on August 26 in one of the worst losses in Giants' history.
