Dodgers quietly get important roster win before Phillies showdown

1 hour ago 3

The Los Angeles Dodgers received a bit of good news before opening a highly anticipated series against the Philadelphia Phillies. While much of the focus has been on injuries and roster shuffling, the Dodgers managed to keep a former All-Star in the organization after what could have been the end of his time with the club.

Infielder Santiago Espinal cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City, allowing Los Angeles to retain valuable infield depth despite recently designating him for assignment. It's the type of move that may not generate headlines now, but it could become important later in the season.

Dodgers dealing with mounting injury concerns

Los Angeles enters its weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies coming off a sweep of the Colorado Rockies, but the victories came with a cost. Both Kiké Hernández and Teoscar Hernández landed on the injured list, forcing the Dodgers to make roster adjustments.

Kiké Hernández's situation was especially unfortunate. After finally making his season debut, he suffered an oblique injury that quickly ended his return. Those injuries created an opportunity for the Dodgers to reshape the roster, but they also increased the importance of maintaining organizational depth.

That's where Espinal comes in. Rather than losing him to another club through waivers, Los Angeles now keeps an experienced veteran available in Triple-A should another need arise.

Former All-Star still offers value

Espinal's numbers with the Dodgers this season were not particularly impressive. In 26 games, the 31-year-old hit .220 with one home run, four RBIs and a .604 OPS. Those struggles ultimately led to his removal from the major league roster.

Still, the former MLB All-Star Game selection brings something every contender values: versatility. Across seven major league seasons with the Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds, Espinal has appeared in more than 600 games while building a reputation as a dependable defensive infielder.

His ability to play shortstop, second base and third base gives Los Angeles flexibility, particularly as injuries continue to test the roster.

Why this could matter later

The Dodgers don't need Espinal today. That's the luxury of having one of baseball's deepest rosters. But championship contenders rarely make it through a full season without calling on organizational depth. One injury, one slump or one unexpected roster need can quickly change the equation.

If the Dodgers need a right-handed bat off the bench or additional infield help later this summer, Espinal remains a phone call away in Oklahoma City. For now, Los Angeles can focus on a marquee showdown against Philadelphia.

At the same time, the Dodgers quietly secured something every contender values this time of year: another experienced option waiting in reserve.
