Freddie Freeman is dialed in at the plate in the first week of the season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The superstar first baseman just doesn't have as much to show for it as you might think.
Freeman is batting .250 this season.
According to Statcast, Freeman's expected batting average this season is .449. That's a number that accounts for the quality of contact to determine what a hitter should have going for them, even if the batted ball luck hasn't actually been in their favor.

In slugging percentage, it's an even more remarkable gap.
Freeman has a slugging average of .333 this season. His expected slugging by quality of contact is .943.
Yes, it's all small sample size stuff. But it shows that Freeman is in a good place to begin this season.
So far this season, Freeman has put 12 baseballs in play. He has barreled three of them.
His average exit velocity is 95.9 miles per hour, and his launch angle is 18.9%. He has found the "launch angle sweet spot" in half of the swings he put the ball in play.
Baseball is a funny game, and any numbers like this in a limited data pool can be a bit misleading.
But here, they mostly tell Dodgers fans that Freeman is swinging it well in the early going. It wouldn't be surprising to see him go on a hot streak here once the baseball stops finding opposing gloves.
