Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's Madison Square Garden wedding has caused a lot of conversations, not only for the A-list celebs who were in attendance but also for how the people of New York City could be affected. Prior to the couple saying "I do," an estimated $160,000 was reported that would need to be needed for security needed to keep them and their 1,000 guests safe during the July 2 rehearsal dinner and July 3 ceremony.
The six-figure price got a lot of people talking, including Republican congressmember Nicole Malliotakis of New York’s 11th Congressional District, who shared that the superstar couple should be the one to foot the bill and not the people of New York City.
“Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce should reimburse NYPD for the 130 officers needed per day to keep their multi-million dollar, thousand person wedding at MSG safe,” Malliotakis wrote. “Our officers are already working overtime for 4th of July festivities & NYC taxpayers should NOT be on the hook.
Well, Malliotakis got her request granted as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared in a press conference what Swift and Kelce paid for the wedding to NYC.
“Taylor Swift … has paid already the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event,” Mamdani said, referencing Swift and Kelce's wedding. “That was a permit that was finalized, I think, in just the days before the event itself.”
The permit was filed from July 2 through July 4 and was first reported by the New York Times.
According to TMZ, sources tell the outlet that over 70 detectives, 50 police officers, and some higher-ups have been assigned to MSG for the rehearsal on Thursday, July 2, as well as Friday for the big day. The detectives will be working 8.5-hour shifts at $80 to $90 an hour, police officers will be working 9-hour shifts for $70 an hour, with the outlet noting that they are mostly rookies. The number of higher-ups has not been disclosed, but it's estimated that it will total at least a $160,000 price tag for the superstar couple.
Swift and Kelce not only paid the $160,000 for the security but also donated $26 million to over 20 charities across the United States before their wedding.
