The Arizona Diamondbacks may be gearing up for one of the biggest moves of the offseason. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the team is reportedly “motivated” to trade All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte, a development that has quickly stirred backlash among fans and raised doubts about the franchise’s direction, only two years removed from a World Series run.
Marte remains under contract through 2030 after signing a long-term extension, but the timing of the rumors is notable. If the Diamondbacks don’t act soon, Marte will gain 10-and-5 rights (10 years in MLB and five with the same team), which would give him full no-trade protection.
That looming deadline has reportedly prompted internal discussions about whether to move the veteran now while his trade value remains high, and Fans expressed their frustration at the possible move.

The D-backs could use Ketel Marte as a trade chip to fix the rotation
Arizona Diamondbacks may be re-evaluating their position on Ketel Marte, with multiple reports suggesting the team could explore trading the All-Star second baseman to address its pitching needs this offseason.
Earlier, MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert reported that the D-backs had "no intention" of moving Marte or other core players like Corbin Carroll, Gabriel Moreno, and Geraldo Perdomo, who have anchored the lineup for the past three seasons. But with limited trade assets on the major-league roster, that stance may be shifting.
"This year, it seems more likely they will turn to trades to fill their pitching needs, and the Diamondbacks don’t seem to have the players on their Major League roster to do it," Gilbert wrote. While AZCentral’s Nick Piecoro added that those same four hitters remain the least likely to move, but noted the team could still pursue significant deals to strengthen its rotation.
While no decision has been made official yet, the possibility of moving one of the team’s most consistent performers signals how far the Diamondbacks may go to upgrade their pitching staff before 2026
