Deshaun Watson's shocking injury timeline could ruin Browns chances for Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel

Everyone pretty much assumed that Deshaun Watson's torn Achilles from last December meant he wouldn't play at all in the 2025 NFL season.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer was thinking differently, though, and he has new insight on Watson's injury.

Can Watson actually play this season?

“I don’t think it’s impossible at all. I think it’s definitely on the table and I think he could play this year,” Breer told 92.3 The Fan. “You look at the timelines for an Achilles, they do vary a bunch, but based on when he had his second year (December 2024), the idea that he can come back in nine months…you’re still talking about potentially (coming back) before the season.”

Breer went on to reference Aaron Rodgers' Achilles tear from a couple seasons ago, which seemed to cost him time and cause frustration but not actually hold him back as much as many expected.

The Browns have operated this offseason like Watson would never play another snap for them.

They signed two veterans, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett.

They drafted Dillon Gabriel in the third round and Shedeur Sanders in the fifth.

This is a team that knew it needed a quarterback and went out and added four.

The trickiest part about a potential Watson comeback in the second half of the 2025 season is the rookies. You should be rolling out Shedeur or Gabriel at all times to figure out if they can be the QB of the future.

If Watson comes back and steals starts, it just stunts the Browns future. And that would be an awful choice after already missing an entire season.
