ESPN predicts Packers' Matthew Golden to outpace rookie class in major WR statistical category

The Green Bay Packers are set to open the season at Lambeau Field against a familiar divisional foe—the Detroit Lions. Last season, the Lions dominated the Packers, sweeping the regular season series.

One lingering question for Green Bay is the status of star cornerback Jaire Alexander. While Alexander has expressed interest in staying with the Packers, his absence from voluntary workouts has raised eyebrows. Still, the team appears to be maintaining strong lines of communication.

“Alexander has not reported to the Packers’ voluntary workouts, which would raise red flags over his status with the team. While speculation has run wild, passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley sang a different tune, telling ESPN’s Rob Demovsky that he’s been in contact with Alexander every day while skipping the offseason workouts,” Chris Schad reported.

On a more positive note, rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden has emerged as an early bright spot this offseason. His maturity and character were on full display when asked what he plans to do with his first NFL paycheck.

“Definitely get my grandma a house, man," Golden said. "We lost our property a couple of years ago. That's somewhere I grew up when I was younger. It'd be a blessing to be able to get that back for my family.”

Golden’s performance on the field has matched the promise of his character. He's been turning heads during offseason activities, and projections already have him ranked among the top rookie wide receivers. According to ESPN, Golden is expected to lead all rookie receivers in touchdowns, though he may fall just short in total yardage.

Golden is projected to finish with 889 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns, which leads the entire rookie class. Golden has elite speed and great route running ability.

If Golden can stay healthy, he could very well emerge as the best rookie in this class. He’s off to an impressive start—and the Packers might have found a real gem.
