Deion Sanders leaves no doubt on his 'daddy ball' opinion of Shedeur's NFL journey

1 hour ago 3

Deion Sanders is a polarizing figure that has the gift to gab and get people to pay attention by leaning into the words that he speaks. As if he were a pastor who gave one of the best Sunday church sermons, warming up the congregation for the collection plate to be passed around for the fourth time during the service. The luxuries that he wants to bestow upon his son now, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, isn’t something he would allow any parent to do for their student-athlete who is playing for him at Colorado.

This was evident during a recent interview with GBush, who has worked his way up in the Cleveland media scene. Coach Prime held court for over 90 minutes with the same theme resurfacing — Shedeur Sanders' draft slide and how it was the first time Deion Sanders couldn't "fix" the situation. Why are we back at this point a year after Shedeur was drafted? It makes no sense to keep replaying what happened.

We can all agree that some of the stories reported about Shedeur Sanders at the beginning of his NFL career could have been questionable to many who have watched the young man grow over the years playing high school and college football.

Sanders' toughness should never have been in question, after getting sacked 53 times in a season, and he continued to pick himself up week after week and still competed. Some analysts question Sanders' decision-making with his receivers and being under pressure. Sanders didn’t check down and throw passes to players underneath often, but instead threw passes to a receiver with three defenders around him down the field from time to time.

Deion Sanders' biggest task will be letting go

The biggest question arose about Sanders hearing the voice of another head coach who isn't his father and how he would react to being held accountable if he screwed up on the field. There were no real concerns about Deion Sanders becoming an NFL head coach. As much as he may want to coach his sons at the next level, it's time to let go.

This is Shedeur's time to sink or swim without trying to control the narrative. Coach Prime went on to talk about having a conversation with new Browns coach Todd Monken. This goes back to the original thought. If any parent wanted to approach Deion Sanders and try to constructively advocate for their kids in any capacity, that wouldn't fly. Not in the slightest.

"Some ignorant things came out about him pre-draft and all that, and that was a lie," Deion Sanders said on GBush's Barbershop podcast. "He would never go into a meeting with headphones on. He would never go into a meeting unprepared. That's just not who he is. There's no way he could accomplish the things he accomplished without being prepared."

It’s time for Coach Prime to allow Shedeur to go through the maturation of having to compete for the starting position, which is something he hasn’t had to do with him as head coach. We saw Deion Sanders play the quarterback shuffle with the Buffs last season. It's something that would never have happened with his son, because the talent playing behind him was less than to prevent any type of quarterback controversy.

Deion Sanders says his son is hated because of his last name

One thing Coach Prime said was true about people hating on his son because of him. It’s the same thing that has happened to Lebron and Bronny James, and numerous other legendary sports figures that played at a high level, whose offspring decided to follow in their footsteps. Shedeur Sanders having to compete for the Browns starting QB position is a blessing. It is forcing him to work on the inefficiencies in his game.

Deion Sanders said he was upset that he couldn’t fix the situation that Shedeur was going through with his draft process, with the Browns and the media. He didn’t need it to be fixed. Shedeur Sanders calls himself Legendary. Well, "legendary" athletes, who are known as the GOAT or Greatest Of All Time, have to go through a meticulous process, where they are going to endure pain and see some setbacks that may cause them to question their ability and the reason why they are in a particular position.

As hard as it may be for a father to watch his son continue to walk through the fire, being criticized gives him the fuel to keep proving to himself, and the naysayers, that he has earned his keep his way and deserves to be looked at as Shedeur Sanders and not Deion Sanders' son. If Coach Prime continues to be the helicopter dad throughout Shedeur's career, it will begin to show it’s more about Coach Prime trying to live vicariously through his son, rather than Shedeur Sanders becoming great.
