DeAndre Hopkins appears to accuse former Cardinals GM Steve Keim of tampering with failed 2022 drug test

Veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had a storied NFL career that was marred by a suspension, but the 34-year-old apparently believes that suspension wasn't his fault.

Hopkins took to social media on Sunday to seemingly blame former Cardinals general manager Steve Keim for the failed drug test. Hopkins missed six games due to the infraction, which included losing a hefty amount of money, and he hasn't let go of it four years later.

Keim is no longer in the NFL and has been linked in some controversial stories, as Hopkins is just the latest to accuse him of something. Here's what Hopkins had to say.

What did DeAndre Hopkins say about Steve Keim

On Sunday, Hopkins appeared to accuse former Cardinals general manager Steve Keim of contaminating a drug test that led to his suspension.

"I got set up when I played for his team and lost 13 million," said in a since-deleted message. "Skeme Slime was my GM, contaminated drug test go figure how that happened."

Hopkins didn't elaborate before deleting the post, but the Cardinals general manager at the time of the suspension was Keim. Therefore, it's fair to assume that Keim is who Hopkins called "Skeme Slime."

DeAndre Hopkins 2022 failed drug test punishment

In May 2022, the NFL suspended Hopkins for six games for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.

Hopkins was set to enter his age-29 season, his third in Arizona, and had just come off an injury-plagued 2021 season. He went on to play in nine games during the 2022 season before the Cardinals released him in 2023. Keim, meanwhile, stepped down from his job after the 2023 season ended.

Immediately after the suspension, Hopkins argued that he was very careful about what went into his body, making him believe that something went wrong along the way.

"In my 10-year NFL career, I have never tested positive for using performance enhancing drugs," Hopkins said in a statement at the time. "To learn that my November test came back with trace elements of a banned substance, I was confused and shocked.

"I am very mindful of what I put it in my body and have always taken a holistic approach, so I am working with my team to investigate how this could've happened. But even as careful as I have been, clearly I wasn't careful enough. For that, I apologize to Cardinals fans, my teammates, and the entire Cardinals organization. I never want to let my team down. I fully intend to get to the bottom of this. As soon as I have more information I will share it."

In response, Keim entirely denied Hopkins' accusation and even went as far as to retain legal counsel to protect his name.

"I did not contaminate, alter, manipulate, interfere with, or cause anyone else to interfere with DeAndre's drug test or its results. I did not 'set him up' for a suspension, and I had no involvement in causing the test result that led to his suspension," Keim said "Accusing someone of deliberately interfering with an NFL drug test is an extraordinarily serious allegation. It attacks my integrity, my professional reputation, and the work I spent decades building in the National Football League. The fact that the statement was later deleted does not undo the damage caused by publishing it to a large public audience."

Where is Steve Keim now?

After stepping down from his job with the Cardinals in 2023, Keim did not land another job in the NFL. Keim initially stepped away from the Cardinals midseason to deal with a health issue before leaving the organization entirely.

In 2024, Klutch Sports hired Keim as the agency's general manager.
