The Edmonton Oilers took the gamble by trading Stuart Skinner to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for goaltender Tristan Jarry. The signs looked ominous. Jarry had started just 35 games last season, his lowest since the 2019-20 season and had missed three weeks in November.
During his third game for the Oilers on Dec. 18 against the Boston Bruins, Jarry left the ice and was replaced by backup goalie Calvin Pickard. After few days of speculation, head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed on Sunday that the goaltender is likely to miss a "couple of weeks."
It prompted NHL insider Frank Seravalli to predict on the Kevin Karius show on Monday that the Oilers could initiate talks with netminder Marc-Andre Fleury to come out of retirement for them.
"I'd have to think that one name that the Edmonton Oilers are thinking about today in this circumstance is Marc-Andre Fleury," Seravalli said. "Another hour and a half on the ice last week with Minnesota Wild scratches, played in that preseason game earlier this year with the Pittsburgh Penguins. "I think he's got the itch to keep playing and I think for a guy who really has made a home in Minnesota, there's no room for him there with Wallstedt and Gustavsson. So if he's going to come back, it's going to be with a team that has an authentic chance to win, and that's got the Oilers written all over it."Fleury announced his decision in April last year when he signed a final one-year, $2.5 million extension with the Minnesota Wild. He started 22 games for them last season, finishing with a 14-9-1 record, a .899 save percentage and a 2.93 goals against average.
Despite being confirmed to be headed to retirement, Fleury was approached by five other teams in July to extend his stay in the NHL. The former Vezina winner also played a solitary game for the Pittsburgh Penguins, with whom he played for thirteen seasons, in preseason via a professional tryout.
Oilers prospect goalie Connor Ingram impresses against Golden Knights
The Edmonton Oilers started goaltender Connor Ingram, their prospect from their AHL affiliate, Bakersfield Condors, during their 4-3 win against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday. He made 26 saves, earning the win for his team on his season debut.
It was also his 100th career NHL start. He had compiled a 40-44-15 record with a 3.13 GAA and .902 save percentage previously with three teams. Ingram and Pickard are the likely chosen duo for the Oilers as they look to continue their strong form.
