The Philadelphia 76ers will enter the NBA Draft lottery with the fifth-best odds of getting the No. 1 pick, at 10.5%. That is because the team finished with the fifth-worst team in the NBA record-wise. Those aren’t fantastic odds, but at least the Sixers have a legitimate shot.
Many are keeping their eyes peeled on which gets the No. 1 pick because Cooper Flagg, who is unanimously considered to go first overall, is considered a franchise player in the making. When Sixers’ President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey was asked who the Sixers would pick if they won the lottery, he didn’t mince words even if he didn’t name drop.
"This might be one of those years where it's fairly obvious. I think the (No. 1 pick) is where we can drop the act,” Morey said on Rights to Ricky Sanchez: A Sixers Podcast.
The NBA Draft Lottery will take place on May 12. This will mark the first time the Sixers will be playing the odds in the lottery since 2017, when the team traded for the draft rights for Markelle Fultz. Technically speaking, the Sixers aren’t in the lottery because if their pick falls out of the top six, it goes to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Philadelphia has very good odds of keeping the pick, which would be the biggest win more than anything if they do. Getting Flagg would only make that more exciting. If Philadelphia gets Flagg, it opens up many options on whether to put him next to their stars, trade him for another star, or trade their stars and build around him.
Following such a miserable season, getting Flagg would suddenly reverse Philadelphia’s fortunes.
