When news first broke regarding Maxx Crosby's trade to the Baltimore Ravens, the NFL world was understandably shocked. However now, with the Ravens backing out of the deal following concerns regarding Crosby's physical, they've quickly pivoted to fellow AFC North edge, 4-time Pro Bowler, Trey Hendrickson.
These recent developments have now taken the NFL world by storm, with many fans calling out the Raven's shadiness and mismanagement. However, the team that has been inadvertently intertwined with all of this controversy the most has undoubtably been the Dallas Cowboys, who have been publicly making a push for both defensive stars.
The details first emerged with the initial trade agreement between Crosby and the Ravens, where the Cowboys were out-bidded by the Ravens, with an offer of two first-round picks compared to the Cowboys one. In the wake of this missed opportunity, the consensus was then that Dallas would now put all of their energy into going after top free agent, Trey Hendrickson.
But the Ravens beat the Cowboys to the mark once again. However, now this gives Dallas a unique opportunity to snag Maxx Crosby again, this time at a cheaper price.
Most NFL teams, Dallas included, assumed that the Crosby trade was a done deal, so they were quick to start spending in free agency without concern for Crosby. This has led to many teams now being unable to afford Crosby's hefty price tag. The Raiders are amongst these teams as well, as they made over $281 million worth of signings and trades just the day following their deal with the Ravens.
This situation, understandably, places a massive burden onto the Raiders, and what team is better to lighten that load than the Dallas Cowboys and all of their draft capital. With two first round picks in this year's draft, the Cowboys have ample assets to offer.
Unlike other NFL teams, the Cowboy's moves in this first week of free agency have been minuscule, only signing three players thus far, and making a trade with the Green Bay Packers for pass rusher, Rashan Gary.
It's assumed that the Cowboys have been saving their assets to make a push for one of the top defenders, emphasizing Trey Hendrickson. But now, Hendrickson is gone and Crosby's back on the market, so it might take some restructured contracts for the Cowboy's to land Crosby, but their path to landing the 2-time All-Pro is more viable than a lot of other teams currently in the running.
If I was apart of the Dallas Cowboys front office, I would look at these recent developments as a sign. It's not everyday you get a second chance to land a player of Crosby's caliber. Not to mention, his ties to the city and his public desire to return home, it's almost like a match made in heaven. Jerry Jones vowed to be "aggressive" this offseason, but at this point, he sounds like a broken record.
The NFL is showing the Cowboys what direction they should be looking in, it's just up to Jerry Jones to live up to his promise, and truly go after a generational talent, this time on a more favorable deal.
