The Chicago Cubs have lost six straight games in May, and 10 of their last 12, thanks in part to some poor offensive showings this season.
One of the more pressing issues for the Cubs this May has been with shortstop Dansby Swanson, who is hitting .187 with seven homers and a .638 OPS.
But, for the struggling Swanson, one pitch type is proving to be a serious issue. As @Jayhaykid shared on Twitter/x, Swanson has a serious issue against offspeed pitches this season.
Cubs have a serious Dansby Swanson pitch issue
"Dansby Swanson is hitting .082 against non-fastballs this season," @jayhaykid shared. "Of all the batters to see at least 400 such pitches this season, the next-worst is at .178 (James Wood)."
Swanson has a .082 batting average against pitches that aren't fastballs. That's a terrible statistic on its own, and with the context of the next-worst hitter's average being more than twice as good as Swanson's, it's made even worse.
Baseball Savant breaks it down into three categories. Swanson against "Fastball" pitch-types is hitting .272, which isn't bad at all.

But, against "Breaking" pitches, he's hitting just .100, and when facing "Offspeed" pitches, Swanson has a brutal .043 batting average.
These are some very concerning metrics, as pitchers can just avoid throwing Swanson fastballs if he's struggling to hit offspeed and breaking pitches this season.
The Cubs have had some struggles offensively lately, and Swanson's struggles against non-fastballs are proving to be a serious problem for the Cubs.
