Cubs add $76 million veteran starting pitcher to try and help rotation

The Chicago Cubs are looking to a veteran to try and improve their pitching situation.

Late Thursday night into Friday, Yuki Yamada reported that the Cubs have reached an agreement on a minor-league contract with right-hander Kenta Maeda.

Maeda, who has earned $76 million in his MLB career, pitched for the Detroit Tigers earlier this season.

The 37-year old has certainly seen better days on the mound.

In 8.0 MLB innings so far this season, Maeda has allowed seven earned runs.

Last year, he had a 6.09 ERA in 112.1 innings.

Maeda's last standout season was 2020, when he had a 2.70 ERA.

He pitched the first four years of his MLB career with the Dodgers, then had three with the Twins before the last two in Detroit.

The Japanese-born righty has a 4.20 career ERA with a 68-56 record.

The Cubs will likely try to see if Maeda has any juice left at the minor league level before bringing him to the majors.

It's an extremely low-risk signing, and if Maeda has anything left to give, it could work out nicely for Chicago.
