Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up about potentially scoring his 1000th goal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. He said that the moment will be "perfect" and it will be a "high note" to end his career with.
The Portugal international is the all-time top scorer in men's football with 952 goals for club and country. He is also the all-time top scorer in men's international football with 143 goals in 225 games for Portugal, along with 46 assists. However, he has never won the FIFA World Cup.
The 2026 edition of the Mundial is likely to be the 40-year-old's final appearance at the tournament. In a recent interview, Cristiano Ronaldo was asked about potentially reaching the 1000-goal mark in the World Cup final, and he answered (via O Jogo):
"You've been watching too many movies... That would be too perfect. Getting back to reality, all that data makes me happy. A national team and a club don't depend on one player, but it helps to have one who can make the difference with goals. Those are interesting statistics." "Regarding the World Cup, what's already been said, you know, I won't repeat it. I like to score goals, it's my position too. I want to play in this World Cup, otherwise I wouldn't be here. If that movie came true... I'd end my career on a high note, if necessary," he added.Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing four wins and two draws in the Qualifiers in six games.
Cristiano Ronaldo on his spot in the Portugal team
The Al-Nassr superstar has scored five goals in his last four appearances for Portugal in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. However, some pundits and fans believe that Cristiano Ronaldo should not be starting for Roberto Martinez's side if they are to win the World Cup.
When asked if his place in the team is undisputed, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner answered:
"Undisputed, there's no one. Each player deserves it based on their current form, I'm one of them and I try to repay that when I'm a starter. I also try to be an asset off the field for the team. The numbers speak for themselves, I'm very happy, I'm having a good moment with Roberto Martínez and I want to continue like this. We want to finish the qualifying campaign well and we are very positive."Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. are set to face the Republic of Ireland away on Thursday (November 13) and Armenia on Sunday in their remaining Qualifiers.
