Pre-quarterfinals day at the Japan Masters saw another bag of mixed results for India. While Lakshya Sen dominated his men's singles encounter to move forward into the quarterfinals, HS Prannoy was ousted by Denamark’s Rasmus Gemke.
Sen was the first Indian in action today at the Kumamoto Prefectural Gymnasium. In his opening round encounter yesterday, the 24-year-old outdid home favorite Koki Watanabe in straight games.
Today, Lakshya Sen went up against Singaporean Jason Teh. Going into the match, Sen had a 3-0 lead in his head-to-head record against Teh, making him a strong favorite for the win. Delivering on expectations, the World Championships medalist claimed an easy 21-13, 21-11 win in less than 40 minutes to book his berth in the quarterfinals.
Up next, Sen will run into former World Champion and third seed Loh Kean Yew. The duo have previously competed against each other nine time, with the Indian having won six of these encounters.
Elsewhere at the Japan Masters, HS Prannoy took on Denamark's Rasmus Gemke. The Asian Games bronze-medalist was last seen in action at the Korea Open in September, post which he had to skip the entirety of the European leg of the BWF Tour due to injury issues.
In Japan, Prannoy kicked off his campaign with a hard fought win over Malaysian youngster Leong Jun Hao. The Indian veteran was pushed to three games but managed to prevail in the marathon match.
However, Prannoy was unable to bring the same level of play to the court today. The 31-year-old struggled to put Gemke under pressure, eventually going down 18-21, 15-21 against a player he had beaten four times in their last four matches.
