Cowboys reveal why they will not draft Shedeur Sanders despite historic slide

7 hours ago 1

The Dallas Cowboys, like every team, have passed on Shedeur Sanders multiple times through three rounds of the NFL Draft. With the fourth round starting soon, Jerry Jones has revealed why the Cowboys will not be ending Sanders' historic slide.

Sanders was a consensus top 10 pick before the draft process. However, in recent weeks, some experts projected him to be picked at the end of the first round. However, after Day 1, he was still on the board. The New York Giants even traded up to select Jaxson Dart over Sanders. Sanders' slide is surprising, and many teams are likely shocked that he is still available, especially after Dillon Gabriel, Jalen Milroe and Tyler Shough were all selected.

Jones revealed why the Cowboys will not be selecting Sanders despite grading him highly.

"Jerry Jones said the Cowboys evaluated Shedeur Sanders 'extremely high,' but with Dak Prescott there’s not a fit," wrote ESPN's Todd Archer on X. "He said Sanders has 'great character.'"

Fit is likely a key reason Sanders has not been selected. Many teams already have quarterbacks and backups. The teams that do not have clarity in the quarterback room have clearly chosen to go in different directions.

Realistically, the Pittsburgh Steelers could still draft Sanders and even see him start this year. However, a team like the Cowboys will not see value in drafting Sanders. Jones clearly noted that they grade him as a good prospect, but with Prescott in the building, it would be like wasting a pick. Especially after they traded for Joe Milton III from the New England Patriots.

At this point, Sanders will likely be drafted to be a backup. That will be a big surprise after months of him being viewed as a franchise quarterback. Experts are still baffled by his slide, especially after quarterbacks they graded lower were selected. Sanders' character concerns or Deion Sanders' involvement in his career could be playing a role.
