  • My boyfriend and I, (both 34), invited a newer friend, "Jake," and his girlfriend, "Emily," to my bf' parents' cottage for the weekend. We had hung out before

  • without issues. The cottage is essentially a country house, and we also brought our cat, who has been going there since she was a kitten. We checked beforehand that they were comfortable with her coming, and they said they were excited.

  • The problems started almost immediately.

  • Jake repeatedly wore his shoes inside despite being asked multiple times to remove them. At one point, he tracked

    Representative only.

  • mud and goose through the house. When we reminded him again, he responded, "Yeah, whatever."

  • We had divided up meals, with them preparing lunch and us handling dinner the first day. We arrived around 5 p.m. after they had eaten fast food and dessert

  • on the way. Nobody was hungry, so we played board games. Around 7, I offered to make dinner, but they wanted to eat the lunch they had already prepared

  • instead. We all agreed. After a bonfire and s'mores, Emily complained around midnight that we never made dinner. The next day, Jake made a snide comment about preparing dinner on time being "the proper thing to do."

    Not actual story subjects.

  • Despite saying they were fine with our cat, Jake sprayed her with a plant mister when she went near the kitchen or their bedroom. She became so scared that she

  • spent most of the weekend hiding in our room. He also left the screen door open one night and I caught her standing there

  • looking outside. When I asked him to keep the door closed for her safety, his response was, again, "Yeah, whatever."

  • Jake also never helped clean. Emily loaded the dishwasher but didn't turn it on and left the dirty pots and pans for us to scrub.

  • On our last day before leaving, my boyfriend and I vacuumed, washed linens, took out the garbage, cleaned the fridge, and loaded the car. Jake and Emily

  • packed their things, abandoned food they didn't want in the fridge, and lay down on the couch for a nap. When we asked

  • "Yeah, whatever."

  • I found the entire weekend incredibly disrespectful, especially considering they were guests in someone else's family home, albeit a "cottage".

  • Afterward, I stopped engaging with them and declined their invitations. My boyfriend has attended a few events with them. Although he was also annoyed by their behavior, he thinks I'm overreacting by not wanting to be friends anymore.

  • In my opinion, they showed their true colors by disrespecting someone else's home, belongings, and pet after being

  • invited to share that space, even after we addressed the issues multiple times. I don't want friendships with people who act like that.

  • This behavior reveals everything about a person. Someone who says “yeah, whatever” to basic requests about shoes, doors, and pet safety has no interest in being a decent guest. They treat someone else’s home like a hotel with no consequences. They eat before arriving, then complain about dinner timing. They load the dishwasher without turning it on and leave dirty pots for the hosts. They pack up, abandon food in the fridge, and lie down while the hosts vacuum, wash linens, and clean the fridge before loading the car.

  • AIO? EDIT Re. My bf I have brought up many times that I have no interest in continuing a friendship with them and if I were him, I wouldn't either. For whatever reason he has not disclosed to me, he doesn't agree. Their behaviour at the cottage did

  • The boyfriend thinks cutting them off is overreacting because they share gaming and chess interests. Our girl knows what's up, sees the pattern, and rightfully decides it's over. A cat that gets sprayed and left vulnerable to escape does not need these people in her life. And the couple does not need friends who treat their pet like an annoyance and their home like a mess hall.

  • annoy him and he agrees he will never invite them anywhere overnight again but they will still game together online and go to chess nights together. I think my bf doesn't have many friends who share

  • those same interests so he hangs onto the ones who do and doesn't want to see the negative side of them because they get along doing the fun stuff together. I am more in the mindset of having quality friends.

  • Friendships require mutual respect. These guests showed none. They got invited once. They will not get invited again. The boyfriend can keep them for online gaming and chess nights. But they get nothing in real life after a weekend of disrespect toward this woman, her home, and her cat.
