Could Diamondbacks target Cardinals closer amid bullpen injuries?

The Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen is in tatters after yet another injury.

Right-handed pitcher Justin Martinez joined A.J. Puk on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, leaving the Diamondbacks without a closer. Arizona is expected to be in the hunt for the playoffs this season, so they will need to come up with a solution to fix this issue.

With the injuries to both of the Diamondbacks' co-closers, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Diamondbacks are actively looking for bullpen help.

"The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the season with LHP A.J. Puk and RHP Justin Martinez as their co-closers," Nightengale wrote. "Today, Puk was placed on the 60-day IL and Martinez was placed on the 15-day IL. They are actively looking for bullpen help."

Where does this leave the Diamondbacks? After a slow start to the season, Arizona sits at 17-14. With a lot of season left to play and a dangerously thin bullpen due to injuries, the Diamondbacks will likely look to trade to fix their bullpen issues.

One option is St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley. A two-time All-Star, Helsley has been involved in trade rumors all season and is one of the best relievers on the market.

The Cardinals are a below-average team currently, and it seems like a matter of when, not if, they are willing to part ways with the 30-year-old closer before the trade deadline. A team in need of a closer like the Diamondbacks is sure to be in the mix to try to trade for Helsley.
