The Washington Commanders are viewed by most smart people in NFL circles as legitimate Super Bowl contenders in 2025.
Sure, they aren’t on the same tier with teams like the Eagles, Ravens, Bills and Chiefs but they are absolutely on that next level with squads like the Lions.
After shocking the entire NFL and making a run to the NFC Championship game last season, the Commanders have spent the offseason adding key pieces to the roster to give them the best chance of making it to a Super Bowl (or two or three), while Jayden Daniels is still on his rookie contract.
As soon as the season ended, Washington GM Adam Peters started making major moves to bolster the roster for 2025. The Commanders traded a 5th-round pick to acquire jack-of-all-trades offensive weapon Deebo Samuel from the 49ers. Shortly after that move, they shocked the entire league by pulling off a trade for 5-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
Those two moves signaled that the Washington Commanders believe they are a few pieces away from competing for a Super Bowl. When the NFL Draft rolled around, the Commanders added former Oregon tackle Josh Conerly Jr. who should play opposite of Tunsil at right tackle.
While Washington has added key defensive pieces like Javon Kinlaw, Jonathan Jones and drafting a starting-caliber CB like Trey Amos, it’s been obvious the Commanders have been intentional about surrounding Daniels with as much talent as possible on offense.
Training camp is set to begin in roughly a month and right now, the only major question mark for Washington heading into 2025 is surrounding the future of star WR Terry McLaurin.
McLaurin didn’t attend OTA’s as he seeks a new contract. While all reports from insiders have stated the Commanders are expected to reach a new deal with their star wideout, as each day passes, trade speculation only intensifies.
Bleacher Report’s Mitchel Milani believes the Commanders could trade McLaurin to the Buffalo Bills for their 2026 first round pick and their former WR, Curtis Samuel:
“If they want to beat the Baltimore Ravens they’re gonna need to get open and separate against probably the best secondary in the NFL right now,” Milani said. That’s the Ravens right now so that is their main competition and when you watch those games the Bills barely won last year, they struggled to beat man coverage. They struggled to get open and at the Texans game earlier in the year where they lost that game in Houston they struggle to separate and put too much pressure on their running to produce and too much pressure on Josh Allen. I need a receiver that can step up and like Stefon Diggs formally for the offense big explosive chunk plays, but also be able to convert third downs on the regular. So I think Terrry McLaurin would be perfect for Josh Allen. He can get down the field and stretch the defense.”
