Commanders make questionable $60 million decision as free agency begins

The Washington Commanders weren't considered a major player in free agency, and early on, they took care of one of their own.

With left tackle Laremy Tunsil having just one year left on his deal, the franchise moved to tie him down to a new deal.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Tunsil signed a two-year, $60 million deal, which now makes him the highest-paid tackle in football, earning $30 million APY.

That is a huge amount of money for a veteran.

Commanders Pro Bowl Lt Laremy Tunsil reached agreement on a 2-year, $60.2M contract extension with Washington, per his business manager Laolu Sanni of Divine Tree.

Commanders right in signing Tunsil?

You can easily make the case for Tunsil being signed, mainly because he can be a solid protector for Jayden Daniels.

But where things get a little sideways is the $30 million APY.

That is a lot of money for an aging tackle. Even one as good as Tunsil. Plus, $52 million of it is guaranteed. That's massive.

Still, the Commanders felt like there was value in getting him tied down to a new deal, and they moved swiftly to get it done.
