The Indianapolis Colts were pretty much linked to Trey Hendrickson from the very first signs of discontent.
It was hard to read a Hendrickson rumor dating back to last summer that didn't include the Colts in the mix.
That's what makes Wednesday's Hendrickson news particularly disappointing. He's signing in free agency to leave the Cincinnati Bengals and join the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens backed out of their trade to get Maxx Crosby and pivoted to Hendrickson, shutting out anyone else who was interested.
And to be clear, the Colts were still interested. They just were $3 million per year short.
ESPN's Stephen Holder reported this on X on Wednesday:
"On Colts and Trey Hendrickson, per sources: IND made what it hoped was a competitive offer. Colts were in the mix as of Tues. After the Maxx Crosby trade dissolved, Ravens' offer turned things upside down. Colts wanted to be closer to $25M/year. Baltimore’s deal is for $28M/yr."
MORE: Why the Raiders are no longer trading Maxx Crosby to the Ravens
Sure, $3 million per year isn't nothing, especially in an offseason when the Colts are giving Daniel Jones and Alec Pierce both huge contracts.
But in the grand scheme of the NFL, it isn't a ton, and in this case, it means the Colts miss a pass rusher they've been after for months.
"They are still endeavoring to add an impact edge rusher," Holder added on X. "Time will tell whether they can still pull that off."
That impact edge rusher won't be Hendrickson, though, which is a bummer after all this time.
