There is a very high chance that the Utah Mammoth make it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs Wild Card spot. Coach Andre Tourigny has unexpectedly crafted insane schemes and rotations to get this team up to fourth in the Central Division. A lot of their success does not seem like a fluke too. They would want this momentum to keep going in the next few years. So, the front office just figured out their forward situation and it looks like a long-term solution. Utah signed Nick Schmaltz for the foreseeable future.
Why did Utah make the nearly decade-long commitment?
The Mammoth signed Schmaltz to an eight-year deal. The contract value is estimated to be around $64 million and the numbers seem to be well-deserved too. Schmaltz has been a focal point of the offense and continues to be valuable in uplifting the other younger players on Coach Tourigny's roster.
General manager Bill Armstrong saw what Schmaltz was doing and preventing him from entering unrestricted NHL free agency became an easy decision, via NHL.com.
"We are thrilled that Nick chose Utah and wants to remain with the team for the next eight years. Nick is a tremendous player and person who is very deserving of this contract. We expect him to continue producing on the ice and leading our young, skilled forwards for years to come. This is another great day for Mammoth fans and our organization," the Mammoth general manager declared.
Coach Tourigny and Co. have gotten a lot of offensive production from Schmaltz throughout the 2025-26 season. The Mammoth forward has notched 24 assists and 35 goals to lead his team to a 34-26-5 record. At the time of signing, they are currently on a two-game skid after a rough 5-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild. However, Schmaltz has proven that he can help the Mammoth bounce back from these situations.
It is also why Mammoth Governor Ryan Smith found it easy to extend Schmaltz.
"There’s a lot of momentum building around our team and extending Nick Schmaltz is an important part of continuing that. Utah is becoming a true destination in the NHL, and Nick’s long-term commitment reflects the excitement around what we’re building here. We’re thrilled about the role he’ll continue to play on the ice and in our community," Smith said.
It is clear that Schmaltz is the reason why the Mammoth have the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. Hopefully, he plays the rest of his contract with Coach Tourigny and eventually lead them to a Stanley Cup.
