Colorado Buffaloes football legend and Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders reportedly has CFL interest: the Toronto Argonauts added him to their negotiation list, per TSN’s Dave Naylor.
Per TSN’s staff, “With Sanders placed on the negotiation list, the Argonauts have the first chance to sign Sanders, should he decide to play football in the CFL.”
Sanders playing professional football in Canada is possible, but it'd have to happen in the middle of the CFL’s upcoming 2025 season. Cleveland’s training camp ends in the summer, but the league’s Week 1 begins on June 5.
After his precipitous fall to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft, Sanders isn’t seen as a lock to make the Browns’ 53-man roster.
“Sanders landed in a place where he’s no sure thing to even make the roster, given that he’ll likely open training camp fourth on the depth behind Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel. (Deshaun Watson is also on the roster but currently rehabbing an Achilles injury.) But he says he’s willing to do whatever it takes to earn a roster spot,” Pro Football Talk’s Michael Davis wrote.
Of course, Sanders has more than just the CFL as an option if the NFL doesn't work out.
Shedeur has UFL connection to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson through Deion Sanders
Shedeur’s father, Deion Sanders, has a well-established relationship with UFL co-owner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Johnson showed up to College GameDay on the University of Colorado Boulder’s campus and credited Coach Prime for changing college football ahead of the Buffs’ 2023 matchup with Colorado State.
“Coach Prime is changing the face of college football and he’s doing it his way but he’s also doing it in a way that is galvanizing not only a town in Boulder, Colorado but also galvanizing an entire country,” the Rock said, per CNN.
If Shedeur stays in the states and can stick in the NFL – but only through the end of the 2025 season – then playing in the UFL in 2026 could be a possibility.
