Ariana Grande Details Saying Goodbye to 5 Years of ‘Wicked’ With Cynthia Erivo
Colman Domingo roared onto this red carpet.
The Academy Award nominee was the epitome of elegance at the New York City premiere of Wicked: For Good on Nov. 17 as he channeled his character of the Cowardly Lion on the red carpet.
Colman struck a pose in a Dolce & Gabbana look with a brown fur coat which he paired with simple tan dress pants and a low cut v-neck shirt. The 55-year-completed the look with a pair of shiny dress shoes and gold jewelry.
And director Jon M. Chu knew that bringing Colman into the mix with costars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum would be an incredibly fashionable affair, joking with Entertainment Tonight in October, “That’s the Met Gala.”
But it wasn’t just Colman’s style that made the director reach out to him for the role, as Jon felt that Colman truly embodied the spirit of the character, who was first seen in the first Wicked film as a young cub that Elphaba and Fiyero save from a life of never learning to speak. In Wicked: For Good, the Cowardly Lion blames the Wicked Witch for his unfortunate circumstances.
“I just thought he has the presence of a cowardly lion,” Jon explained to ET. “He has the vulnerability of a cowardly lion. I thought he would have fun with it. He was the top of my list.”
As such, he sent Colman a message, which the Running Man star was stunned to receive.
“Here’s the lesson. When someone named Jon M. Chu slides into your DMs,” he shared on CBS Mornings in November, “respond to it.”

According to Colman, the process went pretty quickly after that first DM, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’m glad to be joining at this late date something like Wicked,” he added. “It’s really cool, it’s one of my favorite musicals."
Wicked: For Good hits theaters Nov. 21.
