The Montreal Canadiens are three wins away from usurping the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. Coach Martin St. Louis has a secret weapon and he is a big reason as to why this squad is rising up quickly in the standings. It is none other than Cole Caufield and his amazing showing during their 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres proved why.
Canadiens get huge boost from the right wing
Caufield practically ran the Montreal offense and whatever green light was given to him by Coach St. Louis was doing its magic. He delivered an assist to Juraj Slaflovsky to start off the scoring against the Sabres. Then, the Canadiens right winger took matters to his own hands to prevent a Buffalo comeback. He scored back-to-back goals in the third period to get Montreal the win.
These two goals on the final game day of January were Caufield's 12th and 13th goal of the month. This now ties him for the Canadiens franchise record with Guy Lafleur who also scored the same amount of goals in a month back in 1979. Yes, it took about 47 years before another player from Montreal could score that amount of goals.
Obviously, Coach St. Louis was very proud of Caufield. He even talked about how much the Canadiens winger has grown, via Heather Engel of NHL.com.
“Cole has evolved. He’s not a perimeter player anymore, he’s not just a power-play guy, on the outside. If you see where we play Cole on the power play, he’s goal line, he’s around the net always, he finds himself sometimes screening the goalie. Cole has evolved. We know he’s good on the outside in space, but sometimes the game is asking you to get inside and he’s able to do that," the Canadiens head coach declared.
With this steady development in the Montreal system, they are slowly proving that there is a possibility of leading the Pacific Division. However, the Canadiens still have the Minnesota Wild and Winnipeg Jets to beat if they want to prove that they are serious contenders. Will they go to the Olympic break with momentum on their side?
