Coco Gauff delivered a performance to forget in her opening match against Jessica Pegula at the 2025 WTA Finals. Tennis fans were unimpressed by Gauff's error-prone display and did not hold back in their criticism of the World No. 3.

Gauff is aiming to defend her title at the year-end championships in Riyadh after making history with her triumph last year. However, the two-time Grand Slam champion didn't make the best start to her campaign as Pegula claimed a 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2 victory in their blockbuster encounter.

Coco Gauff appeared far from her best as her serving woes persisted, recording 17 double faults and allowing Jessica Pegula nine breaks of serve. The World No. 3 also found it difficult to rely on her groundstrokes, as evidenced by her 45 unforced errors on her forehand.

Fans were very disappointed by Gauff's poor showing and sharply criticized the "frustrating" 21-year-old, with one of them even describing her as an "overrated" player.

"45 forehand unforced errors... sorry but that's violently disgusting...," a fan wrote. "Coco Gauff is genuinely the most frustrating and inconsistent player. Service game the worst in the entire WTA as well. Gets broken so easily," another fan posted. "Coco is an overrated player — a product of a system desperate to create another Serena, but without her power, charisma, or dominance. Watching the WTA these days just isn’t exciting anymore; the matches feel predictable and dull!" said yet another.

The American also came under fire for delivering such a subpar performance mere days after her bold comments about women's tennis being more "exciting and competitive" than the men's tour, which was dominated by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

"Is this the more competitive WTA people are shoving down our throats😭," one fan commented. "Recently, Coco Gauff stated that woman tennis is more interesting that men tennis... Girl you're the main reason why WTA will never be interesting, clown," another fan chimed in. "And people say the wta is more entertaining… yeah if you want to watch bad tennis lol," another fan said.

Coco Gauff herself expressed frustration with her serve while speaking to the press after her "tough" loss at the WTA Finals. The two-time Grand Slam champion also gave credit to Jessica Pegula for delivering a "smarter" performance after suffering a loss in their recent Wuhan Open clash.

"Obviously, little frustrated with the serve today," Gauff said. "Overall, it was a tough match for me. Jess played well and I thought she was playing a bit smarter than she was when we played in Wuhan."

Despite losing to Pegula, Gauff still has a chance to reach the semifinals of the year-end championships. The World No. 3 will look to bounce back with better performances against Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini in order to reach the final four in Riyadh.

Coco Gauff will lock horns with Paolini in her second group stage encounter. Although the players stand level at 3-3 in their head-to-head record, the American claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory in their most recent encounter at the Wuhan Open last month.
