Mike Krzyzewski offered his outlook on what to watch during the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hall of Fame coach threw out some key matchups and who might have momentum during an appearance on ESPN's Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday.
Krzyzewski said the first few minutes of tournament games often reveal as much as any stat line, noting that nerves can dictate early play. The higher-seeded teams frequently feel the pressure of expectations, while underdogs balance opportunity with caution, which can hurt.
“The closer the seeding, the tighter you can be,” Krzyzewski said about tight play in closely seeded matchups.
"There's gonna be some great matchups on Saturday and Sunday..
Vanderbilt and Arkansas could both win their region..
John Calipari has done a great job with his team"

The former Duke coach mentioned several first-round games he believes could swing the bracket. He pointed to his former player Johnny Dawkins leading UCF against UCLA as a matchup worth monitoring, particularly depending on UCLA dealing with injuries. He also identified Akron versus Texas Tech and Santa Clara against Kentucky as stylistic clashes capable of producing surprises.
Krzyzewski added that experience on the sideline could prove pivotal. TCU coach Jamie Dixon is someone capable pulling out close wins in tournament situations against Ohio State.
Beyond individual games, Krzyzewski stressed the importance of momentum entering the weekend, noting teams such as Arkansas and Vanderbilt are dangerous contenders regardless of seed. Both programs have the talent and form to make deep runs, if they survive the opening round.

Ultimately, Krzyzewski encouraged viewers to focus on the full weekend slate rather than isolated matchups, calling it one of the most competitive first rounds in recent memory.
“There are more good games,” he said. “Just watch and see what happens.”
