(Bloomberg) — Beijing confirmed the arrest of a US citizen on spy allegations, a move that may test a trade truce upheld at a recent summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

U Min Zin has been detained “on suspicion of engaging in espionage activities and endangering China’s national security,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a regular briefing in Beijing on Friday, without elaborating on the allegation.

China notified the US consulate in Guangzhou, Lin said, adding that Min Zin’s rights have been protected.

The arrest, reported earlier by the New York Times, came after Xi and Trump held a warm meeting in Beijing last month that kept trade relations between the world’s two biggest economies on a steady path. That has been a relief to a global economy unsettled by the war in Iran, which has disrupted energy markets.

Min Zin was arrested on June 3, the Times cited people familiar with the matter as saying. He was last seen in Kunming, capital of the southwestern province of Yunnan, which borders Myanmar.

A biography of Min Zin posted on Instagram says he is a PhD candidate in the political science department at UC Berkeley. He is also executive director of the Institute for Strategy and Policy (Myanmar), a think tank “dedicated to promoting democratic leadership and strengthening civic participation in Myanmar.”
