Almost the entire 2026 Kentucky Derby field can call Secretariat a distant relative.
The exception? Chief Wallabee.
Chief Wallabee has an impressive family tree, but it doesn't include Secretariat.
For modern racehorses, that's quite rare. Secretariat's racing success made him a desirable sire, and his family now spans most of the world of thoroughbreds.
Somehow, Chief Wallabee made it to this point despite that.
He's still got quite the genes.
Chief Wallabee horse pedigree
Chief Wallabee still has a legendary 1970s Triple Crown winner in his heritage: Seattle Slew.
Seattle Slew won the Derby, Preakness and Belmont in 1977, and he's five generations back on the paternal side for Chief Wallabee.
One of Seattle Slew's sons was A.P. Indy, who won the Belmont and the Breeders' Cup Classic and is four generations back on that same side of Chief Wallabee's family tree.
The path eventually led to Chief Wallabee's paternal grandfather, Tapit, whose progeny have more than $220 million in career winnings.
His father is Constitution, who was ranked a top-five sire in the world in 2024 and 2025.
His mother is A La Lucie, who never raced but is the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, who has an impressive track record.
So yeah, Chief Wallabee isn't lacking, even without Secretariat DNA.
