Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5 recap: Do Atwater and Fox track down the bomber?

Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5 brings Kevin Atwater right in the middle of action, professionally and romantically. Titled Miami, the latest installment in the crime drama is jam-packed with intrigue, action, and explosions that leave Atwater thinking about a future possibly away from Chicago.

He gets a new partner in episode 5, Officer Fox, whom he knows from the Police Academy. They get into street work and a new case that involves bombing in targeted places in downtown Chicago. By the end of Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5, Atwater and Fox track down the bomber, Chris Lubiak, and get into a shootout that injures one of them.

Minor injury aside, tracking down a bomber before he causes more destruction isn't the only action going on for Kevin Atwater in the episode. He also gets some action in the love department.

Did Atwater and Fox arrest the bomber in Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5?

Atwater and Fox partners to track down the bomber, Chris Lubiak, in Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5. But while they are able to find him, the duo who become the highlight of this episode don't technically arrest Lubiak because he's already dead.

With the tip from the guy they brought in for questioning, the same guy who helped Lubiak film his manifesto videos, the team tracks him down to his old school, where he supposedly plans to bomb to "make a statement." Despite earlier tensions between Atwater and Fox, they are partners again during the mission, which sees them running after Lubiak in one of the school buildings.

During their pursuit, Lubiak opens fire, and Atwater and Fox get separated, leading him to think that she might be flaking on him again. But Fox gets into a shootout with Lubiak, and she gets injured. Thankfully, Atwater gets a clear shot from the other side and delivers the kill shot that ends the bomber's life. NBC's Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5 also ends with no other bomb going off.

Kevin Atwater finds a love connection in Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5, but is it a little too late?

After reconnecting with Fox in the bombing case in Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5, it was touch and go between them after she revealed that she is moving away from Chicago, the city that Atwater calls his home. But after Fox is shot and the bomber is killed, the two can't help but flirt with each other.

While Atwater is worried about her and wants to ride with her in the ambulance to the hospital, Fox assures him that she's okay and that he should get back to work. But what she doesn't know is that while Atwater wasn't able to ride with the ambulance, he followed her to the hospital. She finds him waiting for her outside the emergency room, and they end the night sleeping together.

Unfortunately, it would be the only night they are going to spend with each other because Fox is going to Miami.

Other highlights in Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5

Kevin Atwater's emotional arc takes center stage in Chicago P.D. season 13 episode 5. He admits at the end of the episode that, between taking care of his father and siblings and his job in the department, his priorities have always centered around others. He hasn't had the time to think about himself or choose for himself.

With his tendency to put himself on the back burner, he doesn't even have any idea what he would do if he got a chance to leave Chicago. Leaving Chicago is also something that he has never thought about before, which is why he's a little taken aback when Fox first mentions that he's moving to Miami. However, by the end, after their night together, Fox gives Atwater a handwritten invitation.

It's an invitation to leave Chicago for Florida, maybe for a visit or more, anytime he wants. While the episode left with no clear indication whether Atwater is accepting the invitation, it also left with a lingering question of what if Atwater is tempted to leave Chicago now that he has a clear reason to after his whirlwind encounter with Fox.
