Chicago Bears make heartbreaking history in close loss to 49ers

The Chicago Bears entered Sunday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers hoping to stay alive for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Things couldn't have started out any better for the Bears as they intercepted 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy on the first offensive snap of the game and returned it for a touchdown.

However, the Chicago defense struggled to contain their opponents after that. San Francisco would go on to score four touchdowns in the first half and then add two more in the second half, including a game-winning grab by Jauan Jennings with 2:15 left to play.

Caleb Williams, Luther Burden III and D'Andre Swift were able to go head-to-head with the 49ers defense for a while, but ultimately came up just short.

Williams threw for 330 yards with no interceptions and two touchdown passes. Swift added two touchdowns on the ground, while Burden III carried a heavy burden offensively with eight catches for 138 yards.

With the loss, Chicago made NFL history, becoming the first team to lose after such a well-rounded performance. More specifically, the Bears became the first team in NFL history to lose after scoring 35 or more points, a defensive touchdown, while surrendering zero sacks and zero turnovers.

Certainly a heartbreaking way to lose out on the top seed in the conference.

That said, Chicago's offense, led by Williams and head coach Ben Johnson will certainly make the Bears a playoff contender in the postseason.

In the meantime, the Bears will face the Detroit Lions in their final regular season game.
