Chelsea eye Borussia Dortmund winger as Jadon Sancho replacement

Chelsea have endured a turbulent first Premier League season under Enzo Maresca, and their chances of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League hang by a thread.

On the back of such a difficult season, one can expect a busy summer transfer window at Stamford Bridge. And one player whose future at Chelsea hangs in the balance is Jadon Sancho.

Though the Blues recently triggered the obligation to buy Sancho from Manchester United, a report suggests that they have also set their sights on Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund.

The 20-year-old has had a breakthrough season at Dortmund so far, with eight goals and three assists, and Chelsea are willing to splash the cash on him to bring him to West London.

Enzo Maresca’s men are also willing to double his current £2.5 million yearly wages.

Gittens is no stranger to Chelsea as he spent some time in the club’s youth academy system before moving to Reading and then Manchester City. He left England in 2020 for Germany, before breaking through Borussia Dortmund’s first team in 2022.

How the arrival of Gittens could impact Sancho at Chelsea

The potential arrival of Gittens at Stamford Bridge will certainly impact Sancho’s role at the club. Some believe that Sancho might be moved on from the club in order to make room for Gittens.

Sancho has had a revival of sorts at Chelsea since joining the club on loan. Though he has managed three goals and 10 assists in 36 games, the arrival of Gittens could see him make way for his compatriot.

If Chelsea decides not to sign Sancho on a permanent basis at the end of the season, they will have to pay Manchester United a penalty fee of £5m. Regardless of how things play out eventually, the Jadon Sancho situation is worth keeping an eye on.
