Charles Barkley rips Spurs after epic collapse: 'Dumbest basketball team in the history of civilization'

1 hour ago 4

Charles Barkley has never held back when it comes to San Antonio, and the Spurs took the brunt of his postgame commentary after they blew a 29-point lead against the Knicks on Wednesday night.

Barkley ripped into the Spurs for their decision-making down the stretch in Game 4, after San Antonio gave the ball back to the Knicks on a questionable shot attempt by De'Aaron Fox and then couldn't get a shot off on the final possession.

The result was the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history for the Knicks and a world of hurt for a demoralized Spurs team, which now trails 3-1.

Here's a look at what Barkley said about the Spurs.

What did Charles Barkley say?

After the Knicks' win, Barkley called the Spurs "the dumbest basketball team in the history of civilization."

"That was some of the most mismanaged, stupid basketball," Barkley continued, adding, "the San Antonio Spurs helped the New York Knicks win this game."

“We saw the dumbest basketball team in the history of civilization. … The San Antonio Spurs helped the New York Knicks win this game.”

It's difficult for a comeback of that magnitude to be possible without a series of mistakes from the losing team, and there certainly were mistakes made by the Spurs down the stretch. Not only did Victor Wembanyama struggle throughout the fourth quarter, but his pair of missed free throws, De'Aaron Fox's ill-fated layup attempt and an errant inbound pass on the final possession all played a role in the Spurs' collapse.

The Spurs were never going to sustain their record-setting 3-point shooting from the first half, but few would have imagined a 29-point cushion wouldn't be enough for San Antonio to hold on. Barkley certainly thinks so, and the Spurs are going to have to win three consecutive games to prove him wrong.
