Everything is on the line as the Champions League enters its knockout stage proper, with 16 teams still in contention for glory.

From 15-time winners Real Madrid to surprise package Bodo/Glimt, competition will be fierce among Europe's elite.

As such, players can often find themselves pushing the line of the rules and walking a disciplinary tightrope in pursuit of victory.

Champions League yellow card suspension rules

Under UEFA rules, a player is suspended for one match if they accumulate three yellow cards that do not result in a red card.

After a one-match ban for three yellow cards, players are then suspended for every odd-numbered caution received, so there will be a further ban for any player reaching five yellow cards, seven and so on.

All yellow cards received during the league phase were carried forward into the playoffs and remain on each player's disciplinary slate until the end of the quarterfinals.

If a player receives their third or a higher odd-numbered booking in the second leg of a quarterfinal, they will miss the semifinal first leg. The clean slate from that point means all players are effectively reset to zero bookings.

Therefore, no yellow card issued during the semifinals can result in a suspension, unless it is part of two bookings and a resultant red card in the same match. This is to ensure that a player can only be banned from the Champions League by a cumulative yellow card suspension. The only way a player can be banned from a UEFA final by being sent off in the semifinal.
