Celtics could trade for Kristaps Porzingis replacement after West rival's active draft night

The Boston Celtics have already had an active offseason in the trade department, and they likely still have some more moves to make.

After sending out Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, the Celtics have nearly accomplished their goals when it comes to adding financial flexibility. However, their goal of continuing to compete for a championship has taken a hit after trading two starters from their 2024 title team.

While the Celtics dealt Porzingis already, they are also at risk of losing Al Horford and Luke Kornet this offseason, which could leave them without a single rotational big from their roster last season. Of course, that almost certainly puts Brad Stevens in the market to make a deal for a big man.

Although the Celtics could simply opt to add a center in free agency, they might be able to capitalize on another team’s draft night. On Wednesday night, the Phoenix Suns used the No. 10 pick via Houston to take Khaman Maluach and also traded for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams, leaving Nick Richards as a potential odd man out.

Although Richards didn’t have the impact Phoenix had hoped for, Boston is admittedly a much better situation than what was going on with the Suns last season. If the Celtics believe they can unlock something in Richards next season, he could be a great addition to their frontcourt.

Averaging 9.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and a block in 57 games last season, Richards’ $5 million expiring contract could make him a perfect trade target for Boston.
