Cavaliers lineup projection with James Harden: How former Clippers star fits with Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley

1 hour ago 1

James Harden is on the move once again.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired the star guard from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for a package that includes Darius Garland and a second-round pick. Harden gets another fresh start with a championship contender, while the Clippers are starting to look towards the future.

While the move is big in name, the Cavaliers didn't change their roster much in the process. Cleveland can essentially slot Harden into their lineup instead of Garland, and let everything else fall in place.

Here's how the Cavaliers lineup will look with Harden's addition.

Cavaliers lineup projection

  • Guard: Donovan Mitchell
  • Guard: James Harden
  • Guard: Jaylon Tyson
  • Forward: Evan Mobley
  • Center: Jarrett Allen

Harden will replace Garland in the Cavaliers' starting backcourt, creating a dynamic duo with Donovan Mitchell. Garland has played just 26 games this year, so Cleveland has had to figure out how to win without him over the course of the season.

The rest of the Cavaliers' lineup should remain static. Jaylon Tyson has started 31 of 46 games this year, and is the most likely candidate to move to the bench if necessary. Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, meanwhile, are steady presences in the Cavaliers' starting lineup.

Mobley has not played in a game since January 26, as he is dealing with a calf injury.

Cleveland traded De'Andre Hunter, who started 23 games, to the Sacramento Kings over the weekend for Dennis Schroder and Keon Ellis, but but Schroder and Ellis will likely come off the bench. The Cavaliers' bench also includes Lonzo Ball, Sam Merrill, Nae'Qwan Tomlin, Dean Wade, Tyrese Proctor, Larry Nance Jr. and Thomas Bryant.

James Harden contract

Harden is currently in the first year of a two-year, $81.5 million deal he signed with the Clippers. The second year of that deal is a player option for over $42 million, giving Harden the power to decide his own future.

As part of his contract, Harden had the chance to veto any deal, so the fact that this trade went through is proof that Harden wants to be in Cleveland. Additionally, Harden could be looking for an extension with the Cavaliers.
