Cardinals promote former Yankees Rule 5 Draft pick to MLB

The St. Louis Cardinals made a notable roster move on Thursday morning. 

According to a club announcement, the NL Central club has placed right-hander Peter Strzelecki on the 15-day IL due to extensor inflammation in his right forearm. 

Taking Strzelecki's spot on the roster is fellow righty Cade Winquest, who was promoted from Triple-A Memphis. 

Winquest was selected by the New York Yankees in December's Rule 5 Draft. He spent spring training with the AL East club and made New York's Opening Day roster. 

However, despite spending just over two weeks on the roster, Winquest did not make his MLB debut. The 26-year-old will now have the opportunity to do so with the Cardinals.

"Had Winquest not reached the majors again with the Cardinals or another club, he’d have had the strange distinction of being a nominal big leaguer who accrued 19 days of major league service — players receive major league service and salary while in DFA limbo — without ever actually getting into a game," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. 

The Yankees designated Winquest for assignment in April, and he returned to the Cardinals after going unclaimed on waivers. 

In 33 appearances at Triple-A Memphis, Winquest has a 4.54 ERA with an impressive 57 strikeouts in 39.2 innings.
