Cardinals 8x All-Star predicted to waive no-trade clause for Yankees

The St. Louis Cardinals are off to a slow start in 2025. Entering play on Thursday, they have a record of 14-17 and sit four games back of first place in the National League Central.

The expectation is that by the trade deadline on July 31, they will be out of contention and will look to sell rather than buy. There are plenty of players that could ultimately be traded away as a result.

One of them is Nolan Arenado, who they tried to trade during the offseason. A trade didn't happen after Alex Bregman joined the Boston Red Sox.

Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report recently made a few trade deadline predictions, one of which had Arenado waiving his no-trade clause to join the New York Yankees.

"It seems like all great Rockies eventually end up spending time with the Yankees, and Arenado would give New York an upgrade over the .705 OPS that Oswaldo Cabrera has produced. This deal would also reunite him with Paul Goldschmidt, as the Yankees try to make a deep playoff run for the second time in as many seasons," Kelly writes.

Arenado and Goldschmidt were teammates in St. Louis, and both of them reunited with a winning team such as the Yankees could spell trouble for the rest of the American League.

If the Cardinals do trade him, they can free up some salary space for next offseason and also open up third base for Thomas Saggese and Nolan Gorman.

A trade would also allow them to get on with the "reset" they had advertised at the start of the offseason last year.

The Cardinals are not a clear contender, and while the NL Central is wide open, they aren't the best team in the division, that honor currently goes to the Chicago Cubs.

But the time has come for St. Louis to face the music and accept that they are no longer the powerhouse they once were.
