Red Sox get unfortunate Kristian Campbell news just before Blue Jays game image

The Boston Red Sox are beginning to feel the benefits of a full throttle offseason, though an unfortunate update on their rookie phenom might be a setback.

After a rough start to the season, the team has risen to a winning record and sits just 1.5 games behind the New York Yankees for the division lead on Thursday. But just before their rubber match against the Toronto Blue Jays, the team released some bad news on one of their most important players.

“Kristian Campbell scratched from Red Sox lineup with right rib discomfort,” Christopher Smith of MassLive reported.

After an early-season call up to the major leagues, Campbell has quickly established himself as a starting-caliber infielder. Across 24 starts at second base and five more in the outfield so far in 2025, he’s slashed .301/.407/.495 with 31 hits against 32 strikeouts.

Cambell hit sixth in both of the Red Sox’s previous two games against the Blue Jays and without him in the lineup the team has slotted David Hamilton in at the keystone.

The team and Red Sox fans can hope the injury is something minor and that Campbell can get back to his incredible rookie campaign sooner rather than later.

“Campbell has been on a historic pace to kick off his young career,” Patrick McAvoy wrote for Boston Red Sox On SI. “He reached base in his first 17 games of the season and passed Ted Williams … for second place on the team’s on-base streak to kick off a career at the age of 22 years old or younger.”

The Red Sox have a home game against the Minnesota Twins on Friday.
