Canada will be the second co-host in action when they face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto at the 2026 World Cup.

After Mexico got underway with a 2-0 win over nine-man South Africa, Jesse Marsch's men have their chance to impress before the United States take on Paraguay in Los Angeles later on Saturday.

Bosnia disappointed Toronto's considerable Italian ex-pat community when they defeated the Azzurri on penalties in the UEFA playoffs to take the final Group B spot alongside Switzerland and Qatar.

That draw gives Canada a solid chance of progressing to the knockout rounds. First up, they must improve a World Cup record that reads played six, lost six across their two previous tournament appearances in 1986 and 2002.

Canada projected starting 11

(4-4-2, right to left): Crepeau (GK) - Johnston, De Fougerolles, Cornelius, Laryea - Buchanan, Eustaquio, Kone, Millar - David, Larin

  • Injured: A. Davies (hamstring), A. Jones (ankle, doubt)
  • Suspended: None

Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies is in the Canada squad but has been dealing with persistent fitness problems since suffering an ACL injury last year. He is still yet to fully recover from a hamstring problem sustained during Bayern's Champions League semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6.

“We did an MRI with [Davies] yesterday,” Marsch said at hs pre-match news conference. “It showed very positive signs that he’s healing incredibly well, almost completely. We’re getting ready to ramp things up. I think that he’s showing, like he always has, a real good ability to recover from muscle injuries.”

Hull City winger Liam Millar may take the left-wing spot after helping the Tigers win the Championship playoffs. Alfie Jones, part of the defeated Middlesbrough squad in that final, is a doubt.

Fellow defender Moise Bombito has only played once since suffering a broken leg with club side Nice in France, but Marsch says he is fit to play a part.

Bosnia projected starting 11

(3-5-1-1, right to left): Vasilj (GK) - Muharemovic, Katic, Kolasinac - Dedic, Sunjic, Hadziahmetovic, Basic, Bajraktarevic - Alajbegovic - Demirovic

  • Injured: Dzeko (knock), Tabakovic (ankle)
  • Suspended: None

Edin Dzeko is the perennial star man for the Bosnians but the veteran striker has picked up a knock in the build-up and may not be risked from the start.

Haris Tabakovic, who could deputise for the former Manchester City man, is also a doubt after turning up late to the camp after his own ankle injury.

Sead Kolasinac was forced off in the UEFA playoffs due to injury but it would be a surprise if the former Arsenal man didn't force his way back into the back three alongside Nikola Katic and Tarek Muharemovic.
