The Memphis Grizzlies made one of the NBA's biggest decisions during the offseason when they traded Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers. Morant had been the face of the franchise for years, and his departure created immediate questions about the organization's future.

Who would become the centerpiece of the next era?

How quickly could Memphis develop a competitive identity without its former star?

And would its young players be ready to handle additional responsibility?

Thursday night provided another encouraging answer.

Rookie Cameron Boozer recorded the first triple-double of his NBA career, finishing with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists as the Grizzlies defeated Portland 124-103. The victory improved Memphis to 5-0 and ended the Trail Blazers' undefeated start.

It also provided a striking contrast between the franchise's past and future.

Boozer dominates without needing huge scoring night

Boozer's 18 points were only part of his contribution. The rookie controlled the game through his passing, rebounding and ability to create opportunities for teammates.

CAM BOOZER TRIPLE-DOUBLE. GRIZZLIES STAY UNDEFEATED. Boozer (18p, 12r, 12a) becomes the second-youngest NBA player to ever record a triple-double, propelling the @memgrizz to their first 5-0 start since the 2014-15 season! https://t.co/TX7La2PPTL

His 12 assists were particularly impressive for a young frontcourt player. Rather than forcing difficult shots, Boozer repeatedly helped Memphis find productive offensive possessions.

That approach fits the identity the Grizzlies are beginning to establish. Memphis received double-figure scoring contributions from eight players, demonstrating that the team does not need one superstar to carry the entire offensive burden.

Isaiah Stewart contributed 18 points off the bench, while Cedric Coward added 17.

The Grizzlies also received contributions from established players including Zach Edey and Ty Jerome. The result was a balanced performance that gradually overwhelmed Portland.

Memphis takes control after halftime

The Trail Blazers remained competitive during the first half, but Memphis began creating separation during the third quarter. With the Grizzlies holding a narrow lead, they produced a 10-0 run that pushed their advantage into double figures.

Edey later connected on a three-pointer that helped maintain the momentum. Portland briefly responded, but Memphis continued finding scoring opportunities from multiple players.

The Grizzlies eventually outscored the Trail Blazers 66-45 during the second half. That included a 33-20 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Portland's Deni Avdija finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, but the Trail Blazers struggled to match Memphis' depth. Former Grizzlies star Ja Morant scored 14 points before leaving with a hamstring injury during the fourth quarter.

Grizzlies rebuild is already producing results

Memphis entered the season with questions about how quickly its young roster could develop. Five consecutive victories do not guarantee long-term success, but they provide encouraging evidence that the team's new direction is working.

Boozer is central to that optimism.

The former Duke standout arrived in the NBA with significant expectations after becoming one of college basketball's most recognizable players. His first professional triple-double demonstrated that his game can influence winning in several different ways.

The Grizzlies are not simply asking him to score. They are giving him opportunities to facilitate the offense, control the glass and make decisions that affect the entire team.

Thursday's performance was another indication that he is becoming comfortable with those responsibilities.

Memphis visits Sacramento on Saturday looking to extend its unbeaten start. For the Grizzlies, the most exciting part of their 5-0 record may not be the victories themselves. It is the possibility that their next franchise cornerstone is already beginning to emerge.
