Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield has perfect response to no WR trade on deadline day

If there was one team that you would have thought could be interested in an offensive trade on deadline day, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fit the bill.

With Jalen McMillan, Bucky Irving, Mike Evans, and Chris Godwin all out injured, it is a bare bones crew for Baker Mayfield and offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard. Yet no moves were made on trade deadline day to help the offense, and in truth, the unit has functioned well this season with a 6-2 record, putting Tampa Bay at the top of its division.

But was Mayfield surprised that no moves were made to help the offense?

“That's how Jason's done things, that's how it is, so, you don't expect anything,” Mayfield said. “We've said we felt really good about the team that we have from the beginning. You always run the risk of bringing in somebody that might throw off the culture a little bit, unless you bring Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson out of retirement. I don't think we had any other options."

Should Buccaneers have made a trade?

It is easy to say yes, given the injuries on offense, but the Buccaneers didn't want to make a trade for the sake of making one. Plus, with Irving and Godwin expected back in the coming weeks (hopefully), the player who would have been acquired via trade would then be pushed down the depth chart.

Also, as Mayfield alludes to, sometimes a trade can upset the apple cart in the locker room, and things can go south, so that is another thing to take into consideration.

The Buccaneers still have weapons, so unless the trade was for Randy Moss, as Baker said, Tampa Bay likely wasn't really in the market for a player.

Now the unit must push forward with what they have and hope to keep their heads above water until reinforcements arrive.
