The Cleveland Browns are coming up on their first game with Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback. Anticipation is building. Sure, he's been booed, but he could absolutely walk on that field and prove the doubters wrong.
One Browns player, however, is dealing with something worse than being booed. He's been hit with the biggest punishment of the NFL's preseason games in the form of a hefty fine.
Now that the full NFL preseason has wrapped, we can look at a tally of all the players that have been fined due to actions taken during those games. The NFL hands out punishments and fines to players who break the rules. Those guidelines are "intended to protect the players from unnecessary risk, promote player safety and emphasize sportsmanship and respect of teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans," the NFL states.
Cleveland player receives the NFL's biggest preseason penalty
During the Browns' Week 1 game against the Chicago Bears, which took place back on Aug. 15, Browns offensive tackle Tytus Howard was penalized for tripping an opposing player, which is under the NFL's category for "striking/kicking/tripping/kneeling." The following weekend, the league hit him with a whopping $12,537 fine for unnecessary roughness. The incident happened in the first quarter of the showdown at the 11:40 mark.
That $12,537 fine was the largest that any player got during the preseason. So, the NFL really laid down the law on him. The fines will keep coming once the regular season starts, and the NFL issues them every Saturday for games played the weekend before.
