Ever since the Cleveland Browns announced that Deshaun Watson will be their starting quarterback this season, there's been a lot of backlash and skepticism about the call. But, all of the attention on the quarterback competition between Watson and Shedeur Sanders may be masking another issue.
The quarterback is important to any team, of course. But, he's not everything. There have to be other pieces of the puzzle that work for a team to really be successful.
One NFL analyst believes that for the Browns, they have a problem that has nothing to do with their quarterback situation.
Cleveland Browns need help at this position
The Browns need help at the edge rusher position. In a feature for CBS Sports out on Thursday, Josh Edwards explains that if the Browns want to succeed, they need help in this area.
"The Browns have been exploring the idea of adding another edge rusher even before Alex Wright succumbed to a season-ending injury," he notes in the piece. "They have experimented with defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. playing on the end, but it sounds as though that was born out of necessity rather than strategy. Bringing in another pass rusher would allow Hall to remain on the inside."
He adds that another area this team should consider beefing up is cornerback. So, it's not one but two weaknesses, really.
Edge rusher is a position this team should look at as the season nears and progresses. It would certainly help Watson or any quarterback on the roster to know that their defense was in good hands with an elite defensive end.
