This Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson quarterback competition inside the Cleveland Browns' camp is darn fun to watch, but it's easy to forget that the answer to this signal-caller question is going to be a huge difference-maker for this team.
So, it's not all that fun and friendly when it becomes obvious that the Browns are hopefully without a strong quarterback at the helm this season.
In other words, whoever gets the start, whether it's Sanders or Watson, they're going to have their hands full, pun intended, trying to get this franchise to fly. Both are talented, and that helps. But, it takes a little more than talent in the NFL. There are other factors, such as the players around you, the coaching and staying healthy.
Cleveland Browns have been dealing with a quarterback issue for decades
Matt Okada of the NFL's official website points out that quarterback problem in a feature about what each NFL team needs to look out for in 2026.
"Let’s not beat around the bush here: The Browns’ biggest roster issue has been the quarterback position for the better part of the last four decades," he says in the piece. "Outside of Baker Mayfield’s rookie contract, Cleveland has had a different leading passer every single year since 2011."
He also notes that if things go sour this year, "it's possible the franchise could be on this carousel again next year if neither player wins some meaningful games." Tell us something we don't know.
The Browns also have quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green on the roster. But nobody has really shown that they're the franchise quarterback for the future of Cleveland. If that doesn't happen this year, look for the Browns to try to get a hero in the 2027 draft.
