Iga Swiatek suffered a 7-6(3), 4-6, 2-6 defeat at the hands of Amanda Anisimova in the final round of group stage matches at the 2025 WTA Finals. The result led to the Pole's exit from the prestigious year-end event, following which she reflected on her loss to the American, delivering a rather bizarre take. Subsequently, several tennis fans criticized Swiatek, with some accusing her of not being sporting enough to give credit to Anisimova.

During a post-match interaction with the media, the Pole bizarrely suggested that her loss to the American in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia may have been her 'karma' following her numerous title triumphs spanning different tournaments in recent years. The former No. 1, currently ranked second in the WTA Tour's singles rankings, said:

"I felt good mentally, physically, and tennis-wise also it was nice, looking at the conditions and everything. So I don’t really get why I couldn’t go out of the group. Maybe I won too much in the last years and this is karma. It’s really hard for me to say."

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) soon took notice of Iga Swiatek's words and proceeded to criticize her, particularly because she didn't acknowledge Amanda Anisimova's powers of recovery on the day.

"Girl brought up freakin' karma...anything but to give the opponent credit," one fan wrote. "“Maybe I won too much and this is karma” and she dead serious too 😂🤣 hilarious player sometimes. Just give credit to your opponent Polander and keep it moving," commented another. "Or maybe your opponent played better and won!," another fan chimed in. "Karma for winning too much in the past? The opponents were better, that's it," opined one. "...Or your competition got better and your rally tolerance goes into the dumpster when you get frustrated. Every time she doesn't feel like she has 100% control of the rally at all times, then she just gives up," another added. "That karma negativity talk at the end was quite odd. I guess that’s what you get when interviews are done before the player has enough time to process the loss as they’re still very emotional," weighed in yet another fan, who empathized with Swiatek.

Iga Swiatek famously won the 2023 edition of the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico, after a dominant 6-1, 6-0 final win over Jessica Pegula. However, her record at the year-end event since then is a cause for concern. In both 2024 and 2025, the Pole failed to make it past the group stages.

Swiatek's 2025 season has now come to an end, with the year yielding mixed results for the former No. 1. While there were some incredible highs along the way, including her surprising title triumph at the Wimbledon Championships, there were quite a few lows as well, with the Pole often falling short of producing her best tennis at deep stages of tournaments.

Overall, Iga Swiatek has finished the year having won 62 and lost 17 of her matches, earning more than $9 million in prize money.
